Disaster Management

In recent years, we have witnessed the devastating impact of natural disasters—floods, severe storms, and other emergencies—that have disrupted lives, damaged property, and strained our local resources. Effective disaster management is not just about responding to crises; it’s about preparedness, resilience, and the commitment to rebuild stronger.

The Challenge:

West Virginia's unique geography, with its beautiful but challenging terrain, makes us particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. Unfortunately, many of our counties have faced repeated hardships due to inadequate preparation, response, and recovery efforts. This is unacceptable. We must do better to protect our citizens, homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

My Commitment:

If elected in to the US House of Representatives, I will prioritize comprehensive disaster management strategies that focus on preparedness, rapid response, and long-term recovery. Here’s how we can achieve this:

  1. Invest in Early Warning Systems: We need state-of-the-art early warning systems that can alert residents to impending disasters, giving them the time they need to evacuate or secure their property. These systems should be robust and cover even the most remote areas of our district.

  2. Strengthen Infrastructure: Our roads, bridges, and public utilities must be resilient to withstand extreme weather conditions. I will advocate for increased funding to reinforce critical infrastructure and ensure that rebuilding efforts incorporate disaster-resistant designs and materials.

  3. Support Local Emergency Responders: First responders are our frontline heroes in times of disaster. I will fight to ensure they have the training, equipment, and resources necessary to perform their duties effectively. This includes supporting our police officers, volunteer fire departments and other local emergency services that are often the first on the scene.

  4. Community Education and Preparedness: I will work to implement comprehensive disaster preparedness programs that educate the public on how to prepare for and respond to emergencies. This includes creating accessible resources for families, businesses, and schools, so they know what to do before, during, and after a disaster.

  5. Long-Term Recovery and Resilience: Recovery doesn’t end when the floodwaters recede or the storm passes. I will push for policies that provide ongoing support to disaster-affected communities, including mental health services, financial assistance, and job creation programs to help rebuild stronger and more resilient communities.

  6. Collaborative Disaster Planning: Disaster management must be a coordinated effort between local, state, and federal agencies. I will work to strengthen partnerships across all levels of government to ensure a seamless and effective disaster response, with a particular focus on rural areas that are often overlooked.

Why This Matters:

Our communities deserve a leader who understands the importance of proactive disaster management. The lives and livelihoods of our families depend on our ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters with efficiency and compassion. This is not just about politics—it’s about protecting our homes, our loved ones, and our future.
