Our Teachers
I want to take a moment to discuss an issue that is at the heart of our community's future: the well-being and support of our teachers. The foundation of any strong community is a strong education system, and at the core of that system are our dedicated teachers who work tirelessly to educate and inspire the next generation.
Our teachers are more than just educators; they are mentors, role models, and sometimes even the lifeline for students facing difficult circumstances. They pour their hearts into their work, often going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed. However, despite their critical role in shaping the future of our state, teachers in West Virginia continue to face significant challenges that need urgent attention.
1. Fair Compensation: It is no secret that our teachers are underpaid. Many are forced to take on second jobs just to make ends meet, which is unacceptable. We must ensure that teachers receive the fair compensation they deserve for the invaluable work they do. This means advocating for competitive salaries that reflect their experience and dedication, and ensuring that pay scales keep pace with the cost of living.
2. Resources and Support: Teachers often have to reach into their own pockets to provide basic classroom supplies. This is a burden that no teacher should have to bear. It is crucial that we allocate sufficient resources to our schools so that teachers have the tools they need to create a productive learning environment. This includes not only classroom supplies but also access to professional development opportunities that help teachers grow in their careers.
3. Smaller Class Sizes: Overcrowded classrooms make it difficult for teachers to give each student the individual attention they need to thrive. By advocating for smaller class sizes, we can create a more effective learning environment where students can receive personalized instruction and teachers can manage their classrooms more effectively.
4. Respect and Recognition: Teaching is one of the most honorable professions, yet it often goes underappreciated. As a community, we must do more to recognize and celebrate the contributions of our teachers. This includes creating a culture of respect for educators, both inside and outside the classroom, and ensuring that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes that affect our schools.
5. Mental Health and Well-being: Teaching can be an incredibly stressful job, particularly in the face of the many challenges our educators encounter daily. We must prioritize the mental health and well-being of our teachers by providing them with access to counseling services, stress management resources, and a supportive work environment that acknowledges and addresses their needs.
6. Workplace Safety and Security: Teaching is stressful enough without adding additional factors associated with keeping our children safe. I have long been a proponent for hiring veterans to protect our schools and making our schools fortresses that deny those who have no business being inside of their walls from gaining entry to cause our students and staff harm. Veterans capabilities are unmatched in combat situations and they are absolutely selfless and dedicated to defending what they are given to protect. Another aspect of this is the need to make certain the buildings and equipment are safe and sanitary to work in and around, not just for our teachers but for our students as well.
I will make it my mission to champion the needs of our teachers and ensure that they have the support and resources necessary to do their jobs effectively. Our teachers deserve more than just our gratitude; they deserve tangible action that reflects the critical importance of their work.
I am committed to working with educators, parents, and community leaders to develop policies that will improve the lives of our teachers and, by extension, the future of our children. Together, we can build a brighter future for West Virginia, one where our teachers are valued, respected, and empowered to make a lasting impact on the lives of their students.
